hi everyone,

well this is another stage in my journey re RA.

I've never had the Flu Jab before and know they do suggest it.

i saw on the news last week they are incorporating thw Swine Flu H1N1 ( sorry can't remember the proper title !! ) in it, well i think they are ... i did ask my Nurse at the Surgery last week when giving my blood and she said she had heard it on the news but they hadn't had any news through to them so she's not sure. also when i saw my GP last week i asked if the Swine Flu was of concern this year and he said no ( this was before i heard about them incorporating the Swine Flu into it )

she said if it is included it will only be a small amount ... and they do make them up about a year in advance.

so really what i'm asking is do you all have it done, i know lots of you have been diagnosed a long time now.

i'm booked in for it on the 16th October i think, i see the Nurse once more before then for another bloods so will ask if she has any more info by then.

many thanks,

Suzanne

Hi suzanne,
this subject usually pops up about this time of year as we all get our flu dates through etc... I heard on the news (local radio station) that is is a triple flu jab this year consisting of the seasonal flu, swine flu and pnemonia, whether this is correct for the whole country or not i don't know. Personally i do not have the jab but many do, i think it comes down to each individual's personal choice.
Best wishes

Hi Suzanne

I have had the flu jab for the past 5 years with no side effects. I also had the swine flu jab last year and again no side effects. I am just about to start on Enbrel and it has been suggested that I also have a pneumonia jab so am waiting to arrange that.
I am sure that you will be fine as the flu jab is not a live vaccine.

Just had mine done this afternoon Suzanne.
I've had them for years due to being diabetic.
Mine had the swine flu in it too, I don't like having them but don't have much choice really.

I'm on Humira and MTX.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

I have had the flu jab for years - possibly because I'm a teacher and exposed to lots of bugs! I was diagnosed with RA last Autumn and my GP told me to have both the swine flu and pneumonia jab. In fact I had to have 2 swine flu jabs as I'm on mtx and so immune suppressed.

Hello Suzanne

I have always had a flu jab as my Husband is an asthmatic. Two years ago I had a flu jab in the November and then had flu at the Christmas. I did not see Christmas and New Year as was flat on my back. It would take me about half an hour to get up the strength to sit up and take a drink or medication. I have never been so ill in all my life. I NEVER want flu again. I found out I contracted flu as my immune system had started to break down and I was then diagnosed with RA in the following March. I dread to think what it would have been like if I had not had the flu jab.

It is a personal choice but I am having a flu jab again this year. Last year I had the swine flu and pneumonia jab.

I've always had a flu jab even before RA but am a bit apprehensive this year as I'm now on mtx. My rheummy nurse told me that the ordinary flu jab was ok but if swine flu I need to miss mtx for a week.

hi everyone,

thanks for all the replies ... you had convinced me to have it done but just read Maria's post about leaving Methotrexate off for a week and this is the drug i am on although not under control yet.

i am finding decisions hard to make right now which is not like me, i think it's because i am not under control and tired, fatigued and in pain.

now wondering if i should ring my Rheumy Nurse for her opinion !!

i might ring her next week after next bloods ... before i am due the Flu Jab.

why can't life be straightforward !!

thanks all for your input.

Hi there,

I never get the flu jag now as I am convinced it's what triggered my RA, It was within a week of getting it that this all started. I am scared to get it now, I have not had it for the last 3 years, I am also asthmatic. I go on Redoxan 8 hour control vit C over the winter and find this a great help. I checked this out with my local pharmacist if it was ok with the therapy drugs and he said yes. Do what you feel is right for you, take care. Lorna x Smile

hi Lorna,

that's an interesting read !!

wish i'd asked at the RA meeting now when i went to the Hospital.

one thing i did ask that was bothering me was can weight loss cause RA and the Consultant put my mind at rest and said no.

mind if i hadn't lost the weight i wonder what a sorry state i would be in with my knee's now ... housebound i think !!

i have lost a lot of weight did it the proper way, went to a Clinic and all on normal food now i have maintained well for the last 2 years.

don't we have a lot to think about with all this.

Hi Suzanne,

Yes we do have lots to think about, we all handle things in different ways. As I said do what you think yourself. I had had the flu jag for about 4-5 years before I was affected by RA. I also had the pneumonia jag too years ago. I remember at the time I got the one that affected me, I didn't feel well virtually right away, then in a matter of days I started to go down hill. And as they say the rest is history. The year after I was diagnosed I wrestled with myself for ages, I was so scared to get it again and the fact that I have Asthma worried me too. I take my mangosteen, and the redoxan during the winter and I try to keep as warm as I can. So far I have kept really well lets hope it stays that way. Lorna Smile

Hi Suzanne

I have been having the flu jabs for years and whilst on methotrexate! I've never been told to stop it RollEyes. I've also had the pneumonia and swine flu jabs. Actually I take anything that's offered ... I'm the opposite of Lorna, I'm too scared not to in case I contract one of these awful things! Catching one of these beastly things would certainly play havoc with the RA and medication.

If life were straightforward we would all be bored ... hmm, wouldn't mind trying though!!! Decisions, decisions ....

hi Suzanne

I rang my gp surgery re flu jabs- they said that they are adding a bit of swine flu vaccine to the ordinary flu jab this year, so to be on the safe side I'll leave off the mtx. Of course, there is a down side- as usual with RA this week my bloods showed that the RA is getting active aain, only slightly, but typical- just when I need to take the mx....ah well.....

Hi Suzanne,

I've been having the flu jab for years and never been told to stop the mtx when I had it.
I didn't have the swine flu jab but that's a different story, although I think it's incorporated in the seasonal flu jab this year. Just hope it's been thoroughly tested now.
